Species: Black Eyed Demon
Powers/Abilities: As a Demon, she has abilities that all Demons do. She is able to posses a person, and she has inhumane strength and unnatural durability. We also assume that she has the power of telekinesis, however we do not see this through the two seasons. Despite her demonic abilities, it becomes apparent that she doesn't fight like other demons. Instead of using her supernatural powers, she refers to simpler ways of fighting, like martial arts: Throwing punches, kicks and occasionally, she uses her knowledge of witchcraft.
Bio: Ruby is a manipulative demon who works for Lilith. In 'Malleus Maleficarum,' Tammi, a demon who makes witches unknowingly sell their soul to her reveals to the Winchesters that Ruby was once a witch who sold her soul to a demon; Tammi. In a scene with Dean, Ruby reveals that demons all were once human, and that their souls being profusely tortured in hell is what makes them what they are now. Through Season 3 and 4, we're led to believe that she's fighting on the Winchesters side of the war.
We first come across Ruby in 'The Magnificent Seven.' In the fight against the Seven Deadly Sins, she comes out of nowhere, fighting through the Demons, helping and saving Sam whilst wielding a demon killing blade that nobody knew could even exist. After revealing that she knows who Sam is and nothing else, she disappears.
In ‘The Kids Are Alright,’ Ruby appears once again bearing news that Sam’s family and friends were strategically killed off. Disclosing to Sam that she is a demon, she gives him information that catches Sam’s attention; she knows how to save Dean from going to Hell.
Through Season 3, Ruby is presented as an ally to the Winchesters. Attempting to earn their trust, she helps Bobby fix the colt (‘Sin City’), saves Dean from being hexed by a witch (‘Malleus Maleficarum’), continuously gives Sam in formation about Dean’s soul and in ‘Jus in Bello,’ she even offers to give up her own life to save the Winchesters from the group of demons outside the police station, an offer which was denied as a person of virtue’s heart was needed.
In the Season Finale ‘No Rest for The Wicked,’ Ruby frees herself from the Devil’s trap Dean put her in and she appears behind him, pinning him to the gate, demanding that he give her knife back, only to have her knife pointed at her neck by Sam. During the search for Lilith in the house, her body is possessed by Lilith herself. This, however, goes unnoticed until the last scene when Sam nearly gives her the demon killing blade. When asked where Ruby is, Lilith says “She’s been a very bad girl. So I sent her far, far away..”
Ruby returns in Season 4 to help Sam get revenge for Dean’s death. Here, it is revealed that during Dean’s 4 month absence, Ruby helped Sam harness dormant powers by feeding him her blood and teaching him how to use these abilities. When Dean returns in ‘Lazarus Rising,’ Sam keeps his demon blood drinking activities a secret until Dean demands to know why Sam trusts her in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer.’
We find out that Lilith let Ruby out of hell in the condition that she kills Sam. Killing the demon she was with instead, she goes to Sam, telling him that she’s there to help. Refusing her help and demanding that she vacates the body she’s currently in, she comes back, possessing a brain dead human, even showing Sam proof of this. Through the four months, Ruby continues to somewhat train Sam and in the process, seduces him. Sam then tells Dean that when he got a lead on Lilith, he went after her, half-cot, and walked into a trap where he was attacked by demons and the reason that he trusts Ruby is because she saved his life.
In ‘Lucifer Rising,’ we discover that through Sam’s desire to prove himself to both Dean and himself, he fails to see that he has been used by Ruby and that all this time, rather than helping Sam, Ruby has been training him to help her do Lilith’s bidding since killing her is the last seal that will set Lucifer free.
Ruby ultimately succeeds and manages to free Lucifer from his cage despite being killed by Dean as Sam hold her still shortly after.
Miscellaneous:
Demon Killing Knife – A blade inscribed with symbols that has the ability to kill only black eyed demons as it seems to have no effect on Alistair (a white eyed demon). It also has no effect on Angels.
Ruby’s Car – An Orange, 1970 Mach-1 Mustang.
