Music Monday: Carry On Wayward Son

Hey, everyone! Nice to see your pretty faces again.

So here’s the first ever post of the new segment of our blog called “Music Monday.” This week, I have for you what is pretty much a Supernatural anthem. And honestly, if you don’t know it, I’m inclined to take away your Supernatural fan membership.

Song: Carry On Wayward Son

Artist: Kansas

Album: (1967) “Leftoverture”

Written by: Kerry Livgren

Carry on my wayward son,
There’ll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don’t you cry no more

Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I’m dreamin’
I can hear them say

Carry on my wayward son,
There’ll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don’t you cry no more

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the even of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, it surely means that I don’t know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I’m like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune, but
I hear the voices say

Carry on my wayward son,
There’ll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don’t you cry no more

Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life’s no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you

Carry on my wayward son,
There’ll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don’t you cry,
Don’t you cry no more,
No more

As you can see from the lyrics, it’s perfect for not just Sam and Dean, but Supernatural as a whole. If the show was to have a theme tune, no doubt that this is it. Out of all the songs played in Supernatural, “Carry On Wayward Son” is probably the most well known by the fans. This song has been with us since the beginning and apart from in Season 1 where the song was played in the beginning of the penultimate Season episode, “1.21 Salvation”, it has been played in the beginning of each Season finale: “2.22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part Two”, “3.16 No Rest For the Wicked”, “4.22 Lucifer Rising” and “5.22 Swan Song”. Bets are that it’ll be used in the Season 6 finale, too.

The song hasn’t had any other significant appearances in other movies or shows and neither has any significant cover of it been done.

Up there is the original video for “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas. And down here, we have the beautiful Supernatural versions from each of the current Seasons… All you gotta do is click on the link.
